The Arctic Essays - Arctic, Artic, Pollution, Lichen, Sea

The Arctic Essays - Arctic, Artic, Pollution, Lichen, Sea The Arctic The Artic Introduction. The Artic is a region at the upper most tip of the Northern Hemisphere. The Artic includes the area around Greenland, USSR, Canada and Alaska. Much of the Artic circle is permanently frozen ice. The Artic is a pristine environment, clean and void of human interference. However as humans move into these areas and begin to extract what ever they can be balance can be tipped, resulting in pollution and destruction of the environment. Climate. The Artic winters much longer than the Summer. In the winter the sun never rises and in the summer it never sets. The average temperature for the Artic is zero degrees of less. Industry and the Artic. There was once a time when the land of the Artic Circle was considered useless and only hospitable to those native to it. However once vast quantities of oil and fish had been found there was a rush of interest in the land. Fishing in the Artic has occurred for thousands of years but in recent years man has been fishing the Artic; in greater numbers and taking more fish. Professional fishermen are taking all kinds of fish as well as whales and seals. In some areas fishermen have become so efficient at their job that quotas have needed to be put on to limit or stop the capture of certain animals. There are many mineral deposits within the Artic Circle. In Russia: nickel, iron ore, apatite, diamonds, gold, tin, coal, mica, and tungsten. In Sweden: iron ore. In Greenland: lead, zinc, molybdenum and cryolite. Spitsbergen: coal. Canada: uranium, copper, nickel, lead, zinc, tungsten and iron ore. The digging out of minerals would inevitably disturb the natural habitat as well as the environment there would be a great cost to maintain the site. Industry that is designed to process various minerals have waste products that would be most unwelcome in the Artic. A good example of this is the pollution that has arisen as a result of the smelting of metals in the Artic. It is for this reason that there is very little industry in the Artic. However Russia, Canada, Greenland and Iceland have several small scale manufacturing plants. The largest industry in the Artic is oil. The rush began in 1968 when a large oil field was discovered, there was a great deal of protest but the development went ahead. Oil extracted from the felid makes its way to Port Valdez via a 1300 kilometre pipeline. Although steps were taken to limit the pipelines affect on the environment it still disrupts the migration of caribou. In 1989 the unthinkable happened and the super tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground spilling millions of gallons of crude oil into the Prince William Sound. The effects of the slick were devastating. Within a week workers counted 24000 dead sea birds and 1000 sea otters. The effects of the slick were felt throughout the food chain from photoplankton to bears. The Exxon company funded the clean up but there was no compensation for the hundreds of people that lost their job as a result of the slick. Pollution of the Artic A large threat to the Artic is transboundry pollution and bioaccumulation. These are both complex subjects but are easily explained. Transboundry pollution is the pollution of the Artic from other countries. The ocean currents and wind conditions result in large amounts of pollution being deposited in the Artic. In winter when the sun is low thick blankets of haze can be seen over the Artic. Bioaccumulation is the process where pollutants build up in the Artic because they cannot be broken down due to the extreme cold. Once harsh chemicals find their way into the food chain they stay there forever, trapped in the animals and sediments. A result of increased pollutants in the atmosphere is the occurrence of acid rain. Sulphur and Nitrogen dioxides drift from developed countries and when they mix with water in the atmosphere they can produce acid rain as strong as lemon juice. The acid snow melts in summer and spring producing an acid shock that can kill animals and plants alike. In 1986 the nuclear reactor in Chernoybl exploded sending a nuclear cloud into the atmosphere that among other places contaminated plants and animals in the Artic region. Particularly affected were lichens, lichens are a plant that makes up the majority of a reindeers' diet. When the reindeers ate the lichens they became radioactive and many thousands had to be shot. Tourism vs conservation. In the battle between tourism and conservation, tourism seems to always win. However in the Artic tourism has so far had little effect (compared to other human activity) on the

How To Avoid Writer Burnout When Its Your Day Job

How To Avoid Writer Burnout When Its Your Day Job He was submerged in words all day. He wrote thousands and thousands of words in any given week on assigned topics, laughing at blog posts that insisted that the most important way to be a great writer was to write X amount of words every day, as if mere quantity had that much to do with it. When he got home after work, the thought of writing for his own blog and fiction projects made him ill, and he was lucky to do much more than sit in front of the TV and turn off his mind completely. For a writer, he didnt write much when he wasnt on the clock. He had writer burnout. You might feel as if you have used up all the words you have left to use. How To Tell If You Have Writer Burnout Writer burnout happens when your day job requires your writing abilities non-stop, but those same abilities are what you also use on your own time for creative enjoyment. If the balance tips too far either way (too much used on the job, too much used for yourself), there will either be severe burnout from giving your best to the job and leaving nothing for yourself, or youll perform poorly at work as you save the best for yourself and give little to your job. Writer burnout happens when you use up all of your creative reserves and become a machine.Writer burnout isnt a matter of writers block, of not having ideas. Many writers who have the start of a serious burnout issue might be churning out fairly decent content and appear to have nothing wrong. Theyve adapted to the pressure of being forced to write a certain amount in a particular way during a specific time frame by creating a routine, an almost internal factory for creating. At least at the start, they keep functioning. Their factory system keeps them going. But gradually it takes them longer to finish writing projects. Their writing isnt as deep or exciting, and readers can tell. Their factory formulas start to show. They resent their low-quality work, the pressure to write within constraints, and the fact that they dont write on their own free time. They get the job done, but barely. If this is you, then youre on your way to writer burnout. We all have different levels of creative energy, and we all have different levels of creative energy reserves. We can even operate on a deficit for short periods of time, eating into those reserves that weve built up. Burnout happens when you have been operating on a deficit for a long period of time. Your writing reserves are all used up, and you turn into a machine. If youre on the path to writer burnout, you need to make changes in what youre doing and rebuild your reserves if you ever want to get back to enjoying writing again. I have a theory that burnout is about resentment. And you beat it by knowing what it is youre giving up that makes you resentful. -Marissa Mayer Change How You Write You can change the way you write in an attempt to slow down, and then reverse, writer burnout. Changing how you write is an option when youre still able to limp along but have a mild sense of panic when you think of continuing on for the next month or half year. 1. Diversify Your Writing If you spend most of your day writing thousands of words in the form of bullet-list blog posts, try writing something completely different on your off time, like a short fiction story, or even poetry. Try writing for pleasure. Write about something you dont normally write about, a topic youve never considered before. Write anything BUT work-topic blog posts or white papers or matter-of-fact content. Forgo anything that smacks of marketing, anything where the letters SEO might come into play, and have some fun. No one has to read it but you. Heck, really change things up and use pen and paper instead of your computer. 2. Stop Writing Content And Copy Why not change the way you think about your writing? Instead of using the buzz words content and copy think of your writing as something more. Its writing, its fiction, its literature, its philosophy. Your words are your story, your creation, your ideas and its perfectly fine if the most they do is bring you enjoyment. Sometimes the phrases we use now to describe our writing are clinical, as if the product of our minds was mere copy meant to be red-penned into submission, or content, which sounds like nothing more than a product to be traded and used. It is easier to find inspiration from great writers than from the great copywriters or great content producers of our time. 3. Reduce The Stop-And-Start Are you able to sit down and write with relatively little distraction, or is a ringing phone or crying child causing you to have to constantly stop in the middle, and then come back and start up again? Are you tasked with lots of non-writing related tasks that cause you to break up the day and actually get less done? That constant stopping and starting is as wearing to your writing as driving a car at high speed, slamming on the brakes, and repeating it over and over again. See if you cant work out a way to set aside large chunks of time (and a quiet place) per writing project to reduce the energy drain that it takes to keep starting back up after youve ground to a halt. It should be an easy sell; much time is wasted when you have to come back to a project and re-read everything to figure out where you were headed with your writing. Diversify your writing, and stop calling it content or copy if youre feeling burned out.Protect Your Writing Reserves You might be so far into the red when it comes to your writing reserves that the only thing you can do is stop the truck. Stop, evaluate, and set up a new system. You need to replenish the reserves and put something back into your creativity bank before you can go on. 1. Reduce Your Writing (Temporarily) You may need to write a bit less, sort of like taking a break from running to give the blister a chance to heal a bit. You must give yourself permission to ignore, for a time, all of the online advice that tells you to press on and write long blog posts regularly or you will take an SEO hit. While thats valid advice, it doesnt do any good to whip a tired horse. Work writing. Reducing the number of posts that need to be written each week is a purely by-the-numbers solution. Youre burned out on writing? See if you can write less for a period of time. Personal writing. I have several personal blogs of my own that I enjoy writing for. They are of different topics than what I write at work and are often a refreshing change. I have been writing many of these blogs for years. However, Ive begun to consider the reality that I may not have an unlimited amount of words to write in any given day, no matter what the topic. As much as I would hate to give up my personal writing projects, even for just a while, I may have to make that difficult choice. If your day job requires a heavy load of writing, proofing, editing, and more writing, and if you are nearing the edge of your finite pool of writing tricks, you might have to reserve your writing energy for your day job alone. Perhaps taking a short break to build up some writing reserves are all it takes. This is not an easy choice, as it can easily cause resentment to build inside of you. 2. Rethink Extracurricular Activities There are a few things we do to supplement our work that help us excel and stay on top of our game. While they arent bad and may actually be a requirement, they can have the unfortunate side effect of feeding writer burnout. Take a break from proofreading. Proofreading is much like writing. If youre reading the work of others, youre not reading it for pleasure. Youre reading it to catch typos, errors, and check the structure. In some ways, it is more draining than writing on your own because you are trying to find  editorial balance  between how youd write it and how it was written. After a while, you might start to notice that typos get by, or you cant be sure what is good writing any more. Take a break from proofreading, or set aside a day or two where all you will do is proofread and you wont mix proofreading and original writing on the same day so that you can compartmentalize your mind for each task. Restrict your work-related reading.  The process of writing isnt just the moment you sit down in front of your keyboard and start typing. It involves the gathering of ideas, thoughts, and making connections.  Writing for your job often means you spend time reading on topics that pertain to what you need to write about. If youre getting burned out, its not just on the act of writing, but on the topics you are being asked to write about. Pull yourself away from the blogs, the feeds, the ebooks, the articles, and read something completely unrelated to work.  One strange side-benefit to doing this is you might actually find yourself coming up with more unique ideas than you would if you kept your reading so fixed inside the work-related sphere. Reading outside of your work-related topics helps you avoid using using buzz words, and helps you question the validity of concepts that only an outsider is capable of doing.

CONTEMPORARY PRACTICES AND DEBATES Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words - 1

CONTEMPORARY PRACTICES AND DEBATES - Essay Example Another example is how the prince’s birth has been announced to the public, which merges new and old media traditions. Clearly, several things, including deciding and announcing the name of royalty, are much faster done now compared to olden times. Moreover, being part of the British family, Kate and William’s little prince will expect large media attraction and coverage, although the British family has tried to limit the latter’s presence in their lives in various ways, since Princess Diana’s death in August 31, 1997 (Lawless and Vinograd, 2013). The royal family, for example, has made arrangements with the British press regarding photos and information that can or cannot be published in the past (Lawless and Vinograd, 2013), a form of censorship that is harder to apply on the foreign/international press. These actions are only some of the examples of the departures of the British family from old traditions and their responses to the intrusions that come from the new media. This essay describes the old and new media environment that the little prince will grow in, as well his impact on the British economy and society. It shows that, despite the prevalence and dominance of the new media, the British family balances old and new cultural traditions as they seek to manage and to influence the media’s increasing impact on society, most especially, on the growth of the little Prince George. To learn more about the role of media in the British family, it would be helpful to describe some changes in how the royal family announced the birth of Prince George. Traditionally, the royal family announces the birth of royal babies â€Å"in front of Buckingham Palace, in the form of a notice placed on an easel in the forecourt of the palace† (Gibson, 2013). British officials changed the tradition when they informed the public of Prince George’s birth through e-mail first, where they added: â€Å"The

Business Organisations And Their Environments Essay

Business Organisations And Their Environments - Essay Example This essay stresses that the employees need to be informed of why technology is being introduced, its perceived benefits and the limitations. Then, they should be given training in how to utilize technology to enhance the work. They should also be encouraged to find innovative ways to utilize technology. Proper information flow and effective communication can reduce the incidences of resistance. This would help the organization to attain higher levels of productivity. This may require the right leadership. People do not want to challenge the tried and tested methods for fear of failure and consequent loss of job. This fear has to be eliminated by accepting mistakes as the learning process. This means the employees have to be given a free hand to learn through mistakes. Understand the internal environment is very critical to the successful implementation of technology. This paper makes a conclusion that an organization cannot function independent of the external environment. In fact the external environment urges an organization to changes its strategy and policies, to ensure that it is able to sustain competition. The external environment becomes a cause for its competitive strategy. The external environment would include the country and the industry policies as well. But in this case, only the competition in the sector has been considered. However, just trying to beat competition through prices is not enough.

Quality Management Assessment Summary Essay Example for Free

Quality Management Assessment Summary Essay The health care quality management responsibilities are to evaluate care that is provided to patients and make sure that these patients receive quality health services. The quality management helps give understanding and awareness to the organization policies and goals. Having risk management in the organization helps reduce any potential of negative impacts that could be placed on any of the patients’, staff and also the organization itself. In hospitals this is a challenging and complex process which payers and participants require that health organization should engage in efforts to evaluate the validity ensure their relevance in quality. One of the basic concepts of quality management is continuous quality improvement which is forever ongoing effort to enhance improvements or process of approach. Throughout time you will use a cycle step develop with a plan by identifying what needs to be changed and establishing a plan, then you have the action of do which is putting the plan to work by implementing the new changes, the other concept is check use data to analyze results and try to see if it made a difference, lastly is act upon plan. The term is interchangeable also called continual improvement and continuous improvement. Another concept of quality management is called total quality management takes a look at overall quality, the design and development which is what the continuous quality management does. Total quality management job is to make sure that they customer expectations of service are met with high quality. Total quality management are associated with the production requirements, creation of plans, prevention of cost and training preparation of the process put in place. All the names of how they address quality management just depends on the industry which makes the name vary from one organization to the next but all means the same thing. The performance management is different because this is a continuous process of communication and clarifying one’s job responsibilities, priorities, to make sure there is mutual understanding between the supervisor and employee. A performance management encourages development and feedback also fosters teamwork among the employees, resolves performance problems, recognizes quality performance and provides decisions on promotions and pay for performance. The performance improvement is somewhat similar to performance anagement because both descriptions implementing interventions for improvements, identifying the problem, encourage employees, offers feedback about performance, educate about job expectations, and offers incentives for performance. Where I work at the hospital we use quality management and they help by reviewing policies and procedures for the organization and for each department. Monthly meetings with the quality management to make us aware of the feedback they get about the quality of service or if they are educating us on new change. Over the years the hospital sets new goals to achieve and want to eliminate poor performance, unnecessary readmissions that cause a financial burden on the organization, so the new implementation of principles will help everyone make this happen. The hospital would like to offer the patients larger role in their health, treatment and hospital experience. The long term goal is to be an anchor of health in the community that helps improves the access, quality, lower cost, and efficiency. We utilize case managers to evaluate admissions to prevent costliest episodes of care which is that unnecessary readmission; this is a short term goal which will not take long to revise. This is informing this team that they are decision makers and this requires the team to help organize what the appropriate protocol is for unnecessary readmission. Another long term goal is the communication across the board for the continuum of care should be improved and need to be building a foundation to help one another coordinate care. Short term goal the hospital needs to rely in a shared belief in evidence based medicine. If there is a protocol in place but the provider detours and does something that they know will work this is information that will need to be shared and documented, to help quality management review and could possibly make revisions in the protocol. This is a plus if we can see patients benefit from this evidence based medicine, and if it is not reported than this means everyone is doing their own thing and not sharing the information to get everyone on the same page. Past experiences impact decisions making and can be positive result because the avoidance is making same decisions as before. External and Internal influence in marketing, health quality initiatives have a huge impact on the hospital. Influence is through developing the right supportive culture, attracting and keeping the right employees to promote quality, updating an in house quality process and furnishing the right tools to their jobs. Having high quality comes from physicians, nurses, administrators and ancillary staff to give high quality care and have effective improvements in order to be successful. It is everyone job to be a team player and participate in helping the hospital achieve the goals. The right supportive culture reflects good leadership and involvement with the hospital by reporting performance indicators, improvements proofs by results, and also promoting a safe environment for everyone. If you don’t have the right support staff then the hospital will be incompliant facing many fines for violations. Developing effective in house outcomes and cost shows the quality of the hospital. This part of the hospital is trained to facilitate the problem solving process with physicians and other employees. Effective problem solving leads to evidence based on the protocols put in place to enhance efficiencies for instance reduce turnaround time in the emergency room or turn around time for test results. The negative impact of this not being successful is that it could ruin the hospital reputation; word of mouth is why majority of the patients’ come. It is very important that the staff of the hospital has the right tools to do their jobs this allows all staff to give high quality care on daily basis and will help identify problems when they do surface, being that the right tools will not be one of them. Not having the right supplies could cause some safety problems with patient care and environmental which could lead to many lawsuits. All hospitals want to improve the quality of care and patient safety because they are taking on the challenge to move forth. What distinguishes the hospital from others is that addressing the issue is not the only thing that needs to be done but back up what is implemented with concrete actions and research more deeply to identify the root causes, providing a solution and being accountable for it. The fundamental qualities which are important and implemented are data quality assessment, data quality measurements and operation data quality improvements. The data quality assessment is the information needed when treating patients and physicians have been made aware of poor data quality ffects the hospitals operation. By quantifying the gap in the value the practitioner can review and determine a cost effective and also the speed the quality improvements. For instance, when a package that was intended for someone else goes to the wrong address that increases mailing and shipping cost because of the incorrect address. Data quality measurements are the results from the data quality assessment in which the data quality analysts synthesize that information and also concentrate on the elements. This is reported with a scorecard showing units of measures and thresholds for example, with the packing going to the incorrect address this can be defined by using quality validation rules for the each address and the information can be all gathered of all incorrect addresses in the system to show why the increase cost. Operational data quality improvement is used to identify data quality rules and this is approved through data stewardship procedure. Clinical and administrators get assistance from both quality management and risk management to improve clinical practice and organization systems. Risk management and quality management collaboration will improve patient overall care, improving external compliance, shielding the hospital from all other risk. Risk management can ensure a flow of information between staff, departments to get better results on patient care also keeping in mind protecting hospital from any exposure of statutes. The unity of risk management and quality management the hospital will benefit and enhance patient safety and minimize the harm of the patient. There will be less duplication, improve communication, coordination of activities through the organizational policy.

The Us Is Murdering The Iraqis Essay -- essays research papers

The US is Murdering The Iraqis Each day we eat three meals a day, sometimes more. We listen to music, drive in our cars, or play on our high-tech computers. Some may pick up the newspaper, but other than those few words on the page, the American population is living a life of excess. Excess that is at the expense of other people's lives. The American people take pride in the capitalistic democracy that is a model for the other countries, but they forget to watch the government. They don't even know what their government is doing. For years now people on the street curse and wish death upon the Saddam Hussein. He has been given titles such as the devil's son because the media has told all of the horrible things he has done. The media has shown how he is killing his own people for power. The struggle for power is killing the people of Iraq, but it is not their own government who is fighting for this power, it is the only remaining world super power, the United States of America, fighting constantly to hold on to its domination. It is a ritual of the United States to stop any country from taking our power. The government will destroy any way of life that may take away from the policy of democratic promotion, for the US is the model of such a way of life. If that role was threatened then their power would be threatened. This is shown in the history Iraq and U.S. relations from 1972 on. In 1972, Iraq began to nationalize its oil; large amounts of money where now coming into the country. Saddam was using this money to help his people in a way no other country ever has. A free education system was set up for everyone in the country, from the equivalent of kindergarten to college or professional school. There was free housing for everyone. There was also a medical system that was free for Iraq people, while for non-citizens, it was about three dollars. This three dollars was for everything, from strepp throat to heart surgery. All of this improved the quality of life for the people of Iraq. The infant mortality d ecreased and people were living longer and better lives. Saddam oversaw all of this and his people loved him. But the United States government felt that Saddam and Iraq were growing too powerful in the sensitive Middle East region, and thus began a series of attempts to weaken their power. 1972 is when the U.S. put Iraq on the list of terrorist nations. T... ...ty, behind all the highly confidential, top secret files, they plan to trap these countries under their control while furthering their own power and well being. Children and people of all ages are dying at this moment in Iraq, so that we, the people in America, can live a life of abundant materialism. This is just one country in the world, there are sure to be others in the past, present and the time to come, that will suffer and die at the mercy of the United States of America. Yet people are too concerned with the trivial things of their daily life to take interest in the government that is killing people and destroying cultures. The United States of America is supposed to have the government of the people, so unless we, the people do something, we will continue to be the murderers of innocent people. All of the information in this paper came from Father Harring. He had traveled to Iraq and is working with the Voices in the Wilderness organization to help the people in Iraq. He quit his job as a professor in Connecticutto work full time with the organization. He gave the speech on Iraq sanctions (because Father Gumbleton had been hospitalized and was still ill) in October 1999.

Analyzing of the Changes that Occurred during the 1960’s in Civil Rights Movements

To what extent did economic and political developments as well as assumptions about the nature of nature of women affect the position of American women during the period 1890-1925? In the years 1890-1925, the role of women in American society had changed politically, economically, and socially. Women were no longer considered the servant of men. She was considered an important part of society, but wasn’t able to lead in areas dominated by men. In this time period this is when things started to change for the women. The late 1800’s saw an emergence of women’s rights groups. These groups stressed that women were not only able to do skilled jobs, but capable in acquiring these positions. In the past, when had been held back by the lack of education, strength, and the amount of money in their banking account. However, women began to seeing an availability of an education, jobs, and social events. As the 1800’s comes to an end ant the 1900’s enter women b egan to see clearly. Then in the 1908 the Supreme Court ruled the Muller vs. Oregon case, which said that even though women were becoming better educated, they still couldn’t have the same treatment men did; the court also believed that women belonged at home, in a class by herself (Doc B).Throughout all these rulings, some women began to feel that society might not be the place for them. Under all that pressure, women’s rights groups enhanced their campaign and pushed hard for women’s rights. They were mainly focus on the need for women to vote. They stressed this because at the time women felt that voting was helpless. They supposed they lived in a society that needed them to only serve men and bear children. The women’s rights groups changed that though by pushing women to get jobs to support their families and nation and also vote for understanding politicians. After a good period of time, the women of this country began to fight back. They started fig hting back by getting jobs hat paid off and by voting. After  women were held back by society, women won the battle for social equality. In 1923, the Supreme Court ruled Adkins vs. Children’s Hospital that there previous ruling in the Muller case was wrong (Doc J). That court had also say that from 1908-1923 the status of women had almost been changed completely.A women’s movement occurred during 1890-1925. It began with women were entering the personnel for their right to work. It continued with involvement of middle class women in social issues and continued with the new workers during the World War I. It ended with economically independent women during the noisy 20’s. Economic opportunities opened the chance for women to become politically active and change how America views women. As the position of women increased so did their income.

Nursing-Sensitive Indicators Essay

According to the American Nurses Association, nursing-sensitive indicators â€Å"reflect the structure, process and outcomes of nursing care.† (â€Å"Nursing Sensitive Indicators,† 2015) Understanding the indicators is an important piece of nursing, not only to assist the patient, but the patients loved ones as well, to ensure quality patient care. In this particular case, had the nurse understood the reasoning and data behind the Pressure Ulcer Rate and Restraint indicators, and communicated the necessity to report any pertinent findings the CNA may discover in the nurse’s absence, the CNA would not have dismissed the reddened area over the patient’s lower spine and would have immediately informed the nurse of the finding. Upon returning the patient to bed, the CNA would have also known not to place the patient back in bed on his back and re-apply the restraints. Instead, would have had the patient lay to one side and stressed the importance, to the patie nt and family member, of frequent turning, to reduce the chance of pressure ulcers. Quality patient care can only be achieved with teamwork and open communication. The discussion of pressure ulcers in hospitalized patients has become an increasing issue with more attention to the prevention of such since the early to mid-1990’s. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) state that stage III and stage IV pressure ulcers occurring during admission are considered preventable (Zaratkiewicz et al., 2010). While the gentleman in our case scenario represented what would be considered a stage 1 pressure ulcer, with proper quality care and training, even this stage 1 ulcer could have been prevented or at the very least, the progression halted. If the nurse had a better understanding of nursing-sensitive indicators, or the theory behind them, then maybe he or she would take more ownership in the prevention of pressure ulcers. Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington, conducted their own study regarding pressure ulcers and ways to prevent them. Their study was  intended to track, prevent and improve skin-related outcomes (Zaratkiewicz et al., 2010). While the results of the study showed a large increase in minor pressure ulcers, it showed a huge decrease in stage III and IV ulcers, the most costly and reportable types. Education and staff reinforcement lead to early detection and improvement in practice, ultimately faring better for the patient. Maybe if the hospital in the scenario had communicated such important figures or conducted their own study, the nursing staff and even the CNA’s would have a better understanding and ultimately provide better care. As far as ethical issues such as the request for a kosher meal that ended up not being kosher, we as nurses accept and agree to abide by a code of ethics. If I were the nursing shift supervisor and this case scenario occurred, there are a few different things I would use to discuss with my staff. First of all, I would remind all nursing staff of the code of ethics we all accepted the day we graduated nursing school and offer copies to each of them to serve as a reminder. Specifically, for this scenario, I would point out; â€Å"Human Dignity is respect for the inherent worth and uniqueness of individuals and populations. In professional practice, concern for human dignity is reflected when the nurse values and respects all patients and colleagues† (â€Å"The Essentials,† 2008). While I am not Jewish and not receiving a kosher meal does not seem to be a big deal to me, I know that it is important to my patient and an acceptable request, so it should be a priority for me. Secondly, I would start a monthly ethical education series, choosing a different topic to better educate my staff. In the world we live in today, there are so many cultures and a necessity to be more aware of ethical treatment, that the staff should not be expected to â€Å"just know it.† This knowledge comes from on-going education and it is up to the hospital and staff to make sure they are kept as up to date as possible regarding ethical treatment of patients. I would also involve my Board of Ethics or ethical expert from the hospital to intervene and sincerely apologize to the family. While we won’t be able to fix the meal that was already eaten, we can ensure the patient and family that steps have been taken to support special requests of patients from now on. Evolution of Management Thoughts Reflection Paper Essays

Evolution of Management Thoughts Reflection Paper Essays Evolution of Management Thoughts Reflection Paper Paper Evolution of Management Thoughts Reflection Paper Paper Evolution of Management Thoughts Reflection Paper by: Ryan T. Lorico The universe is a gigantic organization. It is an intertwined facet of thoughts, imagination, and reality. It is an object of endless puzzles and loopholes. Like an organization, entities are always subjected to question and argue, to change and advance. Furthermore, it is labyrinth where youll get lost and may never come out; a maze of constantly changing walls giving way for evolution and reincarnation of objects and beliefs. Life, for me, is a process of learning and management. It is because you need to plan how to live your everyday. My mind tells me that you are your lifes own manager. You are your accountant, messenger, and your help. As humans, we are obligated to adjust and measure the changing environment. As the world or universe change, so must we, as what Charles Darwin was telling us centuries ago. Indeed, the world is a battlefield; you must be fit to survive. In the same way, for you to prolong your career or to even live up your life, you must be well rounded with ideas of survival. Evolution, as the word tells us, are changes made to either develop or destroy us. An evolution phase can either be an end of an era or a start of a new ideology. Evolution is a cycle. In every evolution phase, new techniques to manage our day-to-day are invented. History tells us, from Socrates to modern philosophers, that indeed, changes took place, shaping our world that we have today; and humans as managers of the world, tried to reshape their principles and policies, to re-access life and on how to manage it. Looking back, pagans before believed that everything around them is free and holy. They managed their lives through instinct and nature-lore. They do not have neither the technology nor concept; no form of monetary or trade. Our ancestors are free-dwelling; who would have thought that from pagans and savages, well be as modern and advance as we are today? Thus, contributions of our great philosophers will always be remembered till the end of our civilization. Those concepts will be foundations of modernization and building blocks of todays society. For years to come there will be new Socrates and the likes; as well as new philosophies that will run the world as it turns, thus, evolution and cycle continues.

Report Details This tab listsall of your scores in one place. First, it includesthe score you got for each section along with a score range of around 40-60 points. This is shows you the range of scores you might end up with for that section if you took the test again assuming the same level of preparation. You'll also see where you fall in the national percentile range: The Report Details tab also shows you your subscores for Reading, Writing, and Math, each out of 40 points. These are accompanied by statistics on thetotal number of questions for each section and the number that you got correct, incorrect, or omitted. These are followed by your two cross-test scores, which are also out of forty points: Finally, you'll see your seven subscores, each out of fifteen points. These help to identify more specific areas of strength and weakness: If you took the essay, your essay scores will also be at the bottom of this page: Notice that there are little "i" icons in the corner of the boxes for each of these scores. If you click on them, you'll get an explanation of which skills are incorporated into that score. At the top right of all the score boxes (except for the essay scores) you'll also be able to click "show details" to see your national percentile ranking for each subscore. Essay Details In the next tab, Essay Details, you'll see the prompt you answered on the test reproduced along with a scanned copy of your essay. You can print your essay using the button in the top right corner of the box with the prompt. The Skills Insight tab will give you more information on what you essay scores actually mean. Skills Insight The Skills Insight tab includes pages for each of the three main testing categories (reading, writing and language, and math) plus the essay if you took it. This part of your report is intended to help you see which academic skills you need to work on and which you've mastered already. You can also link your report to Khan Academy from within this tab - more on that option later. Score Sends This last tab provides information on how to send your scores to colleges. If you haven't sent any scores yet, you won't see any schools listed. Just click on the "Send Additional Score Reports" button to send score reports to more colleges and scholarship programs for a fee. What Do I Do With All This Information? You may feel like just ignoring the details in your score report and obsessing over the final numbers, but if you do that you’re abandoning an opportunity to see where your weaknesses lie and how you can prepare better for the next test date.Take a look at each section individually and find out where you had the most trouble so you can decide where to focus your studying efforts. The easiest way to use these scores to study for your next test is to link your report to the Khan Academy site, which will then give you individually tailored practice materials. You'll see an option to do this at the top of the Skills Insight tab. Khan Academy is not a cure-all, however, and you may need to strike out on your own to address some deeper issues. Here are some examples how you could respond to different scenarios: Your Weaknesses Were Command of Evidence and Expression of Ideas Practice your passage reading skills, and find out what works for you. Usually, on the Reading section, it saves time to skim the passage and then go through the questions before you do any closer reading. If you omitted lots of Reading and Writing questions, you might be running out of time, which is probably because you are spending too much time reading closely before you get to the questions.Practice timing yourself with real SAT passages and questions. You should also make sure you’re not making assumptions about the passages and confusing yourself.Sometimes students make the mistake of inferring too much information from SAT passages. Stick to answering questions based on the specific evidence given in the passage. You Struggled with Advanced Math Topics You don’t have trouble with dumb mistakes on easy questions, so that’s good news.Your problem is most likely content-based, which is more fixable.Look for any patterns in the categories of questions that might point to specific gaps in knowledge.Study up on the formulas you’ll need for the SAT, and make sure you know how to use them. This could also be an issue related totime management. If you notice that you omitted a lot of questions, this might apply to you.Remember that you shouldn't linger for more than a minute on each question in the math sections. Move on when you find yourself stumped so that you don’t waste too much time on any one question. You can also employ some of the general strategies outlined in our articles on raising low math SAT scores and getting an 800 on the math section. You Did Well on the Multiple Choice Writing Questions, but You Got a Low Essay Score If you did well on the multiple choice writing questions, then your problem is probably not grammar and sentence structure. You might just need to work on the holistic organization of your essay and use of examples from the passage. Take a look at these tips for improving your score and this step-by-step guide to writing a great essay.Remember to make your essay long enough so that your ideas are fully developed. Include at least two or three body paragraphs that address specific examples of how the author develops his or her argument. Challenges of Western Brands when Marketing to Chinese Literature review

Challenges of Western Brands when Marketing to Chinese - Literature review Example This potential can be signified by the continual growth of retail sales of consumer goods, for instance retail sales figures increased by 3% in 2007 (PRC 2011). China may be described as a large and homogenous developing market. The ‘huge population, the rapid industrialization and unprecedented economic growth’ provides manufacturers a great opportunity (Ewing et al., 2002). Multi-million Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) like Coca Cola, Uniliver and Mc-Donald’s have experienced a lot of success in this market. The consumer brand consciousness in china goes through four eras and steps into a post-industrialization era. The consumer’s attitude has seen a change from a supply-side orientation to a demand-side orientation (Schlevogt, 2000). Nolan (2002) once pointed out that china is moving rapidly to integrate with the world economy. The Preference For Domestic Brands There are still some issues which may act as an impendent for international companies. One such impediment, cited by many scholars, is local brand loyalty in china. Ayala and Lai (1996) claimed that foreign brands may find it hard to enter this market, due to the development of brand loyalty. â€Å"Foreign brands underestimate the power of domestic brands and the degree of brand loyalty to them† (Ewing et al, 2002). ... Other factors that internal brands have to contend with while competing with local brands are ethnocentrism and protectionism. According to Bates (1998) the idea that â€Å"west is best† is no longer the dominating factor for consumer’s first choice. Although, western culture still does influence consumption behaviors, it tends to benefit local brands more than their foreign competitors. For example, there has been a general trend among businessmen to wear formal business attire, rather than casual wear. But local brands like Youngor and Firs have been the main beneficiaries of this trend instead of foreign manufacturers. â€Å"European fashion was most aware by Chinese consumers, but consumers simply consider it as a source of choice rather than actually purchasing European fashion products† (Bates,1998). According to Nolan (2002) when China joined the World Trade Organization, their local corporations needed to find a way to compete on a worldwide field. Chinaà ¢â‚¬â„¢s industrial policy also faced many issues in the process of emerging into the global business arena. These limitations in turn, constrained the development of local brands. For instance, ‘policy inconsistency exists in the same industry, China’s weak economy based, and failures in China’s bureaucracy’ (Nolan, 2002). The Growth of China’s Fashion Industry The Vogue China Fashion Index (2006) (the National Bureau of Statistics) found that Chinese consumers associate fashion with modernization, innovation and personalization. According to the statistics, 18.7 % of Chinese consumers consider modernization as the highest factor while selecting fashion, and then followed by 17% who consider

2012 Movie Critique Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

2012 Movie Critique - Essay Example The movie, that was released on November 13, 2009, has been produced by Harald Kloser, Mark Gordon and Larry Franco, and the executive producers include Roland Emmerich, Ute Emmerich, and Michael Wimer. Written by Roland Emmerich and Harald Kloser, and starring some of the very talented actors of the time, John Cusack, Thandie Newton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Amanda Peet, Woody Harrelson and Danny Glover, 2012 takes us to an exotic ride where our minds give birth to many questions and enjoy the discovery of many answers at the same time. The synopsis section of Sony Pictures Digital Inc. (2010) states that, â€Å"Never before has a date in history been so significant to so many cultures, so many religions, scientists, and governments. ‘2012’ is an epic adventure about a global cataclysm that brings an end to the world and tells of the heroic struggle of the survivors.† This report tends to critically analyze different elements of the movie. The thesis statement is that t he Hollywood and the entire entertainment industry can expertly and creatively interpret science, history and archeology to produce an astounding artifact that can excite the whole population making them defer their skepticism for some time. Let’s explore the movie and its filmic elements to find out how much the movie collaborates with our thesis statement. Storyline Critically analyzing the storyline, it must be said that it is quite asinine. However, the disaster scenes are hilarious. The story begins with Dr. Adrian Helmsley, who belongs to an international geophysical team, examining the effect of radiation from exceptional solar storms on earth. During his investigation, he learns that the earth’s temperature is rising. He informs the President about the earth’s conditions and warns him that if he does not take proper measures to stop the anticipated damage, the whole mankind will be ruined with the disaster that is expected to come with the heating up of the earth. Jackson Curtis, a writer, comes up with the same information after he meets Charlie Frost on his camping trip to Yosemite. Charlie Frost is shown preaching that the world is heading towards its end as predicted by the Mayan calendar. World’s leaders from industrialized countries are shown building four massive arks with billions of Euros to save their wealthy families from the approaching disaster instead of thinking about common people. They have no idea how their arks will survive the doom if the catastrophe is the prophetic prediction. No sooner than later, strong volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and sun storms converting into tsunamis, surround the planet creating havoc all around the humankind. The movie ends showing the recession of the tsunamis merging all continents. The survivors include Adrian, Laura, Jackson and his family. Acting The cast of 2012 contains some of the best actors that have made the story look like real. The cast includes John Cusack as ' Jackson Curtis', Amanda Peet as 'Kate Curtis', Chiwetel Ejiofor as 'Adrian Helmsley', Oliver Platt as 'Carl Anheuser', Thandie Newton as 'Laura Wilson’, Danny Glover as 'President Thomas Wilson', Woody Harrelson as 'Charlie Frost', Tom McCarthy as 'Gordon Silberman', Liam James as 'Noah Curtis', Morgan Lily as 'Lilly Curtis', Zlatko Buric as 'Yuri Karpov', Johann Urb as 'Sasha', Chin Han as 'Tenzin', and Beatrice Rosen as 'Tamara'. Since, the movie focuses more on the disaster and the pulsating catastrophic scenes, the acting comes at a secondary position. While watching the movie, we actually do not care what the rate of acting is. We focus more on the
